# Fix the roof, keep the conservatory

A conservatory that is too hot in summer and too cold in winter is almost always a roof problem, not a structure problem. Replacing the roof with an insulated tiled one typically costs £7,875 to £15,188, a modern glass one £9,450 to £18,225, and reglazing tired side panels around £120 to £250 each. The frames, base and doors normally stay exactly where they are.

Almost every complaint about a conservatory is a complaint about its roof. The frames, the base and the doors are usually sound, and replacing the structure to solve a roof problem is the most expensive answer available.

## Roof replacement and reglazing, and what each costs

Three jobs on a conservatory that already exists. Which one you need depends on whether the complaint is winter, summer, or the glass itself.

### Conservatory reglazing

Choosing

## What we match, and what we do not

We are a windows and doors introducer, so the honest boundary matters here more than on any other page. We match enquiries for work on a conservatory that **already exists**:

- Replacing the **roof**, with tiles or with modern glass.

- **Reglazing** failed or tired side panels in the existing frames.

- Replacing the **doors** into the garden, which is ordinary door work. See bi-fold, patio and french doors.

We do not match **building a new conservatory**, an orangery, or a conversion into a full extension. Those are groundwork, structure and consents as much as glazing, and sending that enquiry to a window installer would waste your time and theirs.

One installer, not five

## Get matched with one local installer

Tell us the postcode and what you need. If we have a local installer covering you, we pass your enquiry to one of them, not five. If we do not, we will say so.

The same conservatory

## It is nearly always the roof

A conservatory gains and loses most of its heat through the roof, which is why insulating or
upgrading that one surface changes the room far more than anything done to the walls.

Before

Yellowed polycarbonate, greyed frames, unusable from May to September.

After

A modern glazed roof with a solar-control coating. Same footprint, same base.

The structure underneath a tired conservatory is usually sound. What has aged is the roof covering and the glazing.
Both photographs illustrate typical conditions. They are not work carried out by
TrustedGlazing, which is an introducer and does not install anything.

Choosing

## Which problem do you actually have?

The two roof options are not a budget choice and a premium choice. They solve different
complaints, and the more expensive one is not always the right answer.

-

### "We cannot use it in winter."

An insulated tiled roof.
It is the only option that makes the space behave like a room. Accept that it will be
darker, and design in roof windows if light matters.

-

### "It is fine until July, then it is an oven."

A glass roof
with a solar-control coating. It attacks the heat without taking the daylight, and it is
far quieter in rain than polycarbonate.

-

### "The roof is fine, but the panels have gone cloudy."

Reglazing.
The failed units come out of the frames you already have, at a few hundred pounds a
panel rather than the cost of a structure.

-

### "The whole thing is coming apart."

Then it may genuinely be a rebuild, and that is not work we match. A settled base or a
frame that has moved is a structural finding, and it is worth hearing from a builder
before anyone quotes you for glass.
